when Santa
really doesn't exist
or maybe just
when we realize
the elves are
children in Taiwan

when talking cartoon animals
stop making sense
and talking
cartoon politicians do

somewhere
part of the Universe dies
and even though
pockets of people
try to bring Hope
we look at it
as another kind
of dope to be avoided
one more way to cut the severity
of reality that hasn't
been made illegal yet

a Regal attempt
at saving our
separate souls
when really
it's the whole
that's suffering
with each disbelief
in fairy tales
each heart-wrenching
wail decrying
true love as
another bedtime
story parents use
to get their children
through adolescence

the essence
of Humanity
is to believe
and to doubt

which will
win out depends
only on the day
